No trip to San Francisco is complete without visiting Alcatraz Island. The former Maximum Security prison which was once the home of Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly is not the most popular paid attraction in San Francisco. This page will guide you through the different tours on offer, how to get tickets and how to plan your visit.

Alcatraz Tours

Alcatraz Day Tour

The Day Tour of Alcatraz Island is the most popular option with the most departures. Explore at your own pace and wander around the Island Prison including the recreation yards, gardens and of course the Cellhouse where you can listen to the award wining audio tour.

Duration: Allow 2.5 hours

Early Bird Tour

The Early Bird Tour is the same as the Day Tour but allows you to beat the crowds. It is the first tour of the deay and departs Pier 33 at 8:45am.

Alcatraz Night Tour

After departing Pier 33, sail around Alcatraz Island and see the hidden spots that were used for escape attempts as well as areas of the isalnd that cannot be reached by foot. Once you step foot on the island you will be led up the hill by one of the official guides who will tell you stories of life on the island prison. Once you reach the Cellhouse, you will be free to explore at your own pace. Another highlight of the Alcatraz Night Tour is the great evening views of San Francisco.

Alcatraz and Angel Island Combo (Seasonal)

Visit the 2 most popular islands on the San Francisco Bay. Included with this option is a ferry ride to and from Alcatraz and Angel Island, as well as a one-hour narrated tram tour of Angel Island. After visiting Angel Island you will be taken to Alcatraz Island to explore at your own pace.

Duration: Allow 5.5 hours

Behind the Scenes Tour

Available Sunday to Thursday at 2:10pm and 2:40pm (Winter Season) this fascinating tour takes you behind the scenes and lets you discover the secrets of Alcatraz Island. You will be led by a knowledgeable guide in a group of 30 or fewer to see such things as the underground jail, tunnels, hidden doorways and special gardens.

Duration: Allow 4.5 hours

Alcatraz Tickets

Tickets can be purchased up to 90 days in advance and tend to sell out up to a month in advance, especially for the summer months and popular tours such as the Night Tour. To purchase tickets, visit the Official Alcatraz Cruises website.

Alcatraz Audio Tour

All Alcatraz Island tickets include round-trip ferry transportation from Pier 33, as well as their award-winning audio tour, of the Cellhouse. Audio is  available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese and Russian.
