While San Francisco plays proxy-host to Super Bowl 50, the city will be in full luster while people cheer and boo their favorite team trying to grab that mighty trophy. You are correct in thinking that the Super Bowl is but 1 day of the week, however because this is the 50th year of celebrating the athletic combat of two leagues on opposite coasts, there is a three week celebration down at the Super Bowl City (look for the lights down at the Embarcadero!) that plays alongside several other Super Bowl themed events and standard San Francisco faire. While darting in and out of bars and clubs, including the free Budweiser event on Union Square (follow TIX Bay Area on Facebook for more information on that one!) don’t forget the many stages that call San Francisco home. Of the several, here are a small handful of shows that boast laughs, stars, and applause.
Satchmo At The Waldorf
Satchmo At The Waldorf is playing at A.C.T. (the American Conservatory Theatre) on Geary St. crossed by Mason St. This one man show has critics talking and audiences applauding. John Douglass Thompson has been hailed as the “greatest classical actor” by the New York Yorker. The story follows the rise of fame of famed Jazz titan Louis Armstrong and his friendship with Miles Davis.
The Book of Liz
The Book of Liz is one of the funniest shows out on the town right now. Over at the Custom Made Theatre on Sutter St. crossed by Powell St. This is the sixth time The Custom Made Theatre Co. has put on this show to resounding success. Tickets go quick so be sure to dash by TIX Bay Area on Union Square to grab tickets. The story is written by David and Amy Sedaris and follows the hilarious adventures of everyone’s favorite squeamish nun, Elizabeth Donderstock.
Foodies! The Musical
Who doesn’t love food and musicals? From the creators of Shopping: The Musical and Party Of 2 comes Foodies! The Musical. It’s a musical about, well, food, foodies, and the subculture of food! It plays up at the Shelton Theaterplex, on Sutter St. crossed by Powell St. It’s funny, usually packed to the rafters, and downtown around all of the bars and clubs you could want.
The SF Playhouse is one of the coolest playhouses in town. They always have something interesting and exciting, something that sparks a conversation for days afterwards. The Nether will be no different! Think Sci-Fi meets Internet meets Crime drama. I know, I’m sold on it too. This show just went up and not much is known about it quite, quite yet but audiences are already recommending it!
