Yes, it is true! We do have a castle in the wine country just North of San Francisco in Calistoga. The name of this authentic looking 13th century medieval Tuscan-style castle is Castello Di Amorosa winery. It is home to fine hand-crafted Italian style wines. It took Darrio Sattui, who is also the owner of Sattui Winery in Napa, 15 years to build. And it is incredible! Not only does this castle include a moat and draw bridge, chapel, courtyard, 5 defensive towers with battlements but it also has hand painted murals in the great halls, a dungeon and torture chamber, the knight’s chamber and of course the all important wine tasting chambers and wine aging cellars.

Many wonderful events happen throughout the year at this winery. We had signed up for the Midsummer Medieval Festival and dinner which happens in June. What a feast! Excellent wines and excellent food! We were greeted by individuals dressed in medieval garments as we arrived and given the tour of the castle. We had a lot of fun! My favorite red wine is Il Barone which has been describe as ‘Impeccable, brilliant & stunning’

So we recommend that you check their calendar of events on their website and look into what they offer. They have the Mystery Event, Chocolate Festival, Hot Havana Night Festival and many more. And if you cannot make any of the special events don’t worry. You can always go anytime of the year for their excellent wine tasting & castle tour. Make sure to bring you camera to record your travel up North to the wine country and visit Castello Di Amorosa winery which is just 2 hours from San Francisco.
